A first 3D design lesson for grades 4 to 8

To teach 3D design, you need a browser, a free design tool, and a clear first challenge. This lesson is written for grades 4 to 8 and fits in about an hour.

Before class

• Set up a free Tinkercad class. Tinkercad runs in a web browser, and its class feature lets students join with a class code, which is how students under 13 can use it without their own account. Check your school's rules on student accounts first.
• If you can, print one sample name tag to pass around. Holding a finished object makes the goal real.

Warm-up (10 minutes)

Pass around a printed object and ask: how do you think a machine made this? Guide students to the idea that a 3D printer builds up thin layers from the bottom. That vertical direction is called the Z-axis.

Mini-lesson (15 minutes)

Show four moves: drag a shape onto the workplane, change its size, turn a shape into a hole, and group shapes together. Point out that sizes are in millimeters.

Design challenge (25 minutes)

Students design a name tag about 50 mm long, 20 mm wide, and 3 mm high, with their initials raised on top and a hole big enough for a key ring. Early finishers add a border or an icon that says something about them.

Share and reflect (10 minutes)

Pair students to swap screens and give one compliment and one suggestion. Close by asking: what would you change if you designed it again?

Adjusting for your grade

• Grades 4 and 5: Give students a starter file with the base already made, and focus on adding letters and a hole.
• Grades 6 to 8: Add constraints, such as a tag that fits a specific backpack zipper, and ask students to measure with a ruler or calipers first.

Printing the results

A tag this size prints in well under an hour on most printers. If you don't have one, a local library makerspace or a printing partner can help.
